Overview of Impumelelo Textile Project

Back to Projects >

The Impumelelo textile project is an initiative situated in the heart of an impoverished, struggling community which gives the women of Etwatwa the opportunity of becoming economically independent.

At present the project is focusing on producing home and fashion accessories as well as gifts products.

Experience has shown that only once women become economically independent do they have the freedom to better address problems such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, Human Rights and the importance of Early Childhood Development.

The women working on the Impumelelo textile project are embracing this wonderful opportunity and look forward to being able to promote their products to the more affluent market, both locally and internationally.

The Impumelelo textile project initiative gives these women the opportunity to take ownership of the business and be economically active.

Etwatwa Township

Etwatwa and surrounding informal settlement areas, in the greater Benoni area of Ekurkuleni, Gauteng is home to approximately 200 000 people, mostly unskilled and unemployed who have been adversely affected by historical problems as well as current challenges such as unemployment and HIV/AIDS.

The John Wesley Community Centre, which is a missionary outreach project of the Northfield Methodist Church, is an ideal venue to serve the escalating needs of the community and have been for the last 13 years.

During this time, the centre has remained focused on delivering a well-structured, holistic programme ensuring that families are able to function as normally as possible within the community. Their training and education programmes and as well as their interactions with the community have helped give appropriate and sensitive support which is greatly needed.

The Impumelelo Textile Project is a joint initiative between the John Wesley Centre and Tangerine Marketing.
